Here's a little background on the book of 1 John:
- It was written by the apostle John who also wrote the gospel of John and the book of Revelation. (John’s name is not in this letter. The early church attributed it to him.)
-It is believed to be written to the same 7 churches in Asia Minor that are mentioned in the book of Revelation.
-It was written in the late 80’s or early 90’s A.D. which was about 60 years after John walked with Christ on the earth, and some 20 years after the apostle Paul died.
-1 John was written some 20 years after the Gospel, and many of the terms used in 1 John have their concepts and meanings defined in the Gospel of John.
-This letter was written to refute GNOSTICISM, which means “Special Knowledge”
- The two most prominent groups of Gnostics at that time were: 1. Docetics: everything that has an appearance is evil 2. Cerinthian (Cerinthus): everything physical is evil
- John is writing to a "Mixed Bag" of people. He is writing to the church but at the same time seems to have some doubts that everyone he is writing to is actually saved
