15) - Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him,
16) - because all that which is in the world: the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17) - And the world is passing away, and its lust. But the one doing the will of God abides forever.

So, God so loved the world that He gave His Son.... why are we commanded NOT to love the world?

I'm not sure. Good question. AGAPE has to do with "Sacrificial" love. I think that in John 3:16 it's showing how God loved "The world" by willingly sacrificing His only son. In this verse in 1 John, I think that John is telling us not to sacrifice ourselves (our time, etc.) for the "Things" of the world. We are to have a spiritual mindset, not an Earthly one.

Some things from my notes:
1) - The command is to stop continually loving the world and things in the world. This command is obviously directed towards the "Unsaved" that are among the people John is writing to because of the second half of the verse which is another hypothetical statement saying that if anyone IS continually loving the word, then the love of the Father is not in them (meaning that they are not saved)
2) - Verse 16 goes on to explain what John means by the things in the world. These three things mentioned (which interestingly enough are the same three things that the devil used to deceive Eve in Genesis 3:6) are all things that are from out of the world and NOT from out of The Father.
3) - When it says "The one doing the will of God abides forever". This is not challenging people to go and "Do" the will of God so that they CAN abide forever. "Doing" is a participle showing a habit of life. It's already in progress. The participle represents a lifestyle which a believer is doing because he has the Spirit of God dwelling in him, so he is continually "Doing" the will of God. It's impossible for a saved person NOT to abide forever.

Ryan, your answers seem to cover the "things" of this world, but doesn't seem to cover the first command. That is: "Do not love the world." I mean, is this proof that God from the beginning, before it was conceived, been against "Earth Day"?

^_^. Thanks for making me smile at 5 in the morning!! Not an easy thing to do!! I think the difference is the motive in each verse. The word for "World" has to do with the world's "System". In John 3:16 God loved the world "In this way", that He sent His son. The motive is the salvation of those IN the world's system. In 1 John 2:15-17 John is telling us to not sacrifice ourselves for the world's system. I don't think that here in 1 John this is referring so much to the PEOPLE in the world's system, as it is to the SYSTEM itself. Just a thought.....

And yes, I would probably say that God is not real concerned with "Earth day"

Yeah, I kinda knew that from being "taught" that, just can't see that in the english language here. World is just WORLD! So we are not to sacrifice ourselves (our time?) for this world system. So, don't serve our country? Military or politics? Cause all of that is the world's system right?
