1) - My little children, I write these things to you so that you do not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
2) - And He Himself is the propitiation relating to our sins, and not relating to ours only, but also relating to all the world.

Some stuff we talked about yesterday:
1) - The word for "Children" means "Child by birth". These were not John's children from physical birth, but born from out of the gospel.
2) - The purpose for John's writing to them is that they "Should not sin". The word sin is an Aorist tense showing a one time act. A Christian can and does commit acts of sin, but cannot live a lifestyle of sin (which we will see later in the book).
3) - If (hypothetical) we SHOULD commit an act of sin, we have an advocate (this is the word for the "Defense lawyer". It literally means "Someone called alongside to help". It's also the word used for "Counselor" in John 14:26). Once we are saved WE are not righteous, but Christ is and He represents us as a defense lawyer would.
4) - The root word for the word "Propitiation" is the same word used for the mercy seat in the Old Testament. The word itself means "Appeasement" or "Satisfaction". Jesus is the only one who can satisfy God's requirements for our sin.
5) - Jesus died for the sins of the WHOLE world but its application and effectiveness is only for those who receive Him.
